Problem Topic
SENSOR: Interpretation of application

Problem Description
Do ALGDEF/, FILTER/, LIGHT/, and WINDOW/ refer only to video sensors? i.e., is it an error to apply one of these to a non-video sensor, or only meaningless? Are they auto-exclusive, i.e., can only one FILTER/ be active at a time?

Resolution

Warning!!

The following statement is only a resolution to a Standard Improvement Request (SIR) and is NOT part of the current DMIS standard, nor is it guaranteed to become part of the next revision of the DMIS standard even if voted and accepted by the DMIS National Standards Committee. This resolution is tentative because it may not be incorporated into the next version of the standard, it could be changed prior to the next release, or it could be changed as the result of the "public review and comment" period required for the next version of the standard. If you choose to use this tentative resolution, you do so at your own risk since at this time it is not part of the DMIS standard.

Resolved per 8/98 DNSC Meeting Oak Ridge, TN.
Responded to questions and changed text in ALGDEF and SNSET

Comment: FILTER/, LIGHT/, and WINDOW/ apply only to video sensors.

To the question:
Should it result in an error? This is DME specific.

To the question:
Are they auto-exclusive? Refer to the resolution of 97-29

Change to the standard:
In ALGDEF the definition of n should change to "is an integer that represents a DME specific algorithm."
In SNSET the definition of VA(label) should change to "is the name of a previously defined DME specific algorithm."

Notes

Added by Bailey Squier, bsquier@cam-i.com on 6/3/1998

Referred to Sensor Group – Interpretation of application regarding video sensors. It was noted that the Sensor Working group was also working on the problem. Returned to Committee to coordinate separate solutions within the SIR Subcommittee.

The minutes from the Ann Arbor meeting in 9/97 contain the above notes. ALGDEF could conceivably be used with sensor types other than video sensors. In fact the standard leaves this open. The other commands refer only to video sensors. In these cases, the standard only mentions video devices. Because DMIS programs can be used on multiple machine types, those that cannot make use of these statements should ignore them. In fact, early on in the development of DMIS, a program was written that measured a part on both a CMM and a video measuring machine. I don't remember the particulars, but to accomplish such a task, a CMM would need to ignore the video statements.

In answer to the second question, all of the above statements may appear multiple times in a DMIS program to define different algorithms, filters, etc. They are only activated by the SNSET statement, and only the currently activated one will be in effect.

FILTER/, LIGHT/, and WINDOW/ apply only to video sensors.

To the question, should it result in an error. This is DME specific.

To the question, are they auto-exclusive? Refer to the resolution of 97-29

Change to the standard: Page 107, Definition of n should change to "... is an integer that represents a DME specific algorithm." Page 151, Definition of VA label, add "DME specific" to the definition.
