Problem Topic
Sect.2.1.1: Clarification in text

Problem Description
Page 5, section 2.1.1 reads "The only acceptable ASCII characters are (decimal) numbers."

This obviously does not mean what it says, since the upper and lower case letters (and many other characters) are also used in DMIS. A statement about acceptable characters is included on Page 4, which seems to imply that any of the 128 ASCII characters may be used, at least in text strings.

My best guess at what the quoted statement means is: "In this specification, ASCII characters are often represented by the corresponding decimal (not hexadecimal) numbers from the ASCII character table."

Suggested Resolution
Rewrite the paragraph to say what it means. If my guess is correct, the proposed text could be used.

Resolution

Warning!!

The following statement is only a resolution to a Standard Improvement Request (SIR) and is NOT part of the current DMIS standard, nor is it guaranteed to become part of the next revision of the DMIS standard even if voted and accepted by the DMIS National Standards Committee. This resolution is tentative because it may not be incorporated into the next version of the standard, it could be changed prior to the next release, or it could be changed as the result of the "public review and comment" period required for the next version of the standard. If you choose to use this tentative resolution, you do so at your own risk since at this time it is not part of the DMIS standard.

Accept proposed resolution AS IS except strike the word "often" in the last paragraph.
