Problem Topic
DATSET: Direction clarification

Problem Description
Note: This is the third of four SIRs relating to DATSET on pages 113 and 114. I will also have several comments on DATSET on pages 17 - 19.

Page 113.

The definition of DATSET allows up to three directions to be specified, but, logically, only two can be used (to establish the principal and secondary axis directions). There is no use for a third specified direction. The text should state explicitly that only two directions may be given.

Also, it is clear that the opposite directions of the same axis (XDIR and -XDIR, for example) cannot be used in a DATSET. This should be made explicit.

Suggested Resolution
My preferred resolution is to rethink and rewrite DATSET.
To fix only these specific problems, add the following to the end of the last paragraph on page 114: "Only two of XDIR, -XDIR, YDIR, -YDIR, ZDIR, and -ZDIR may be used in a DATSET. XDIR may not be used with -XDIR, YDIR may not be used with -YDIR, and ZDIR may not be used with -ZDIR.

Resolution

Warning!!

The following statement is only a resolution to a Standard Improvement Request (SIR) and is NOT part of the current DMIS standard, nor is it guaranteed to become part of the next revision of the DMIS standard even if voted and accepted by the DMIS National Standards Committee. This resolution is tentative because it may not be incorporated into the next version of the standard, it could be changed prior to the next release, or it could be changed as the result of the "public review and comment" period required for the next version of the standard. If you choose to use this tentative resolution, you do so at your own risk since at this time it is not part of the DMIS standard.

The submitters interpretation is correct. SIR 97-56 has been forwarded to the Enhancement Working group.
