Problem Topic
FEAT/PLANE: Defining point of nominal vs.actual

Problem Description
Page 64

A FEAT/PLANE is defined by giving a point on the plane and the normal vector of the plane. When the plane is measured or constructed and the actual plane is defined, any point in the actual plane could be used for defining the actual plane. No relationship between the point used for the actual plane and the point used for the nominal plane is required by the DMIS standard. In the absence of any relationship between the actual point and nominal point, the defining point of an actual plane is nearly useless as a datum in DATSET and other DMIS constructs which use datums.

To alleviate this, it might be useful to specify a relationship between the defining points of the nominal and actual planes. For example, the defining point of the actual plane might be required to be the point on the actual plane closest to the defining point of the nominal plane.

Suggested Resolution
Specify a relationship between the defining point of a nominal plane and the defining point of the corresponding actual plane. The point on the actual plane closest to the defining point of the nominal plane would be a good choice.

Resolution

Warning!!

The following statement is only a resolution to a Standard Improvement Request (SIR) and is NOT part of the current DMIS standard, nor is it guaranteed to become part of the next revision of the DMIS standard even if voted and accepted by the DMIS National Standards Committee. This resolution is tentative because it may not be incorporated into the next version of the standard, it could be changed prior to the next release, or it could be changed as the result of the "public review and comment" period required for the next version of the standard. If you choose to use this tentative resolution, you do so at your own risk since at this time it is not part of the DMIS standard.

DMIS does not specify particular point to feature relationships.
