Problem Topic
DATSET: Primary axis clarification

Problem Description
Note: This is the second of four SIRs relating to DATSET on pages 17 to 19 (section 3.5). Last week I sent in four SIRs concerning DATSET on pages 113 and 114.

Page 17, section 3.5.4 This section begins: "The first step in creating a part coordinate system is to establish the direction of the primary axis based on the primary datum reference of the part. This must be determined with a minimum of three points."

The direction of the primary axis of a system does not have to be established using a plane. It might be established, for example, as the direction of a line between two corners of a part, or, for another example, between the centers of two circles on a part (the TEAM part DMIS program does it this way).

Suggested Resolution
My preferred resolution is to rethink and rewrite DATSET.

To fix only this specific problem, change to quote to read: "The first step in creating a part coordinate system is to establish the direction of the primary axis. This direction might be, for example, the normal to a datum plane."

Resolution

Warning!!

The following statement is only a resolution to a Standard Improvement Request (SIR) and is NOT part of the current DMIS standard, nor is it guaranteed to become part of the next revision of the DMIS standard even if voted and accepted by the DMIS National Standards Committee. This resolution is tentative because it may not be incorporated into the next version of the standard, it could be changed prior to the next release, or it could be changed as the result of the "public review and comment" period required for the next version of the standard. If you choose to use this tentative resolution, you do so at your own risk since at this time it is not part of the DMIS standard.

Resolved per 8/98 DNSC Meeting Oak Ridge, TN.
Modified text in section 3.5.4.

Change the first two sentences of section 3.5.4 on page 17 to read:

"The first step in creating a part coordinate system is to establish the direction of the primary axis. This direction might be, for example, the normal to a datum plane."

Yes, this needs to be changed. The wording in the suggestion sounds ok to me.

"The first step in creating a part coordinate system is to establish the direction of the primary axis. This direction might be, for example, the normal to a datum plane."
