Problem Topic
DATSET: Tertiary clarification

Problem Description
Note: This is the sixth SIR relating to DATSET on pages 17 to 19 (section 3.5) - I thought four would do it, but I found two more. Last week I sent in four SIRs concerning DATSET on pages 113 and 114.

Page 19, first column: The sentence before the example reads: "The use of the tertiary portion of the DATSET is optional and is totally dependent upon the specific application."

It is not clear what this sentence means. In the immediately preceding material, beginning at section 3.5.7 (in the second column of page 18) the term "tertiary" is used twice to refer to the third axis of a coordinate system. The "tertiary" in the quote above seems to mean something else, but it is not clear what.

Suggested Resolution
My preferred resolution is to rethink and rewrite DATSET.

To fix only this specific problem, either delete the quoted sentence, or rewrite it to be clear. It would be good to avoid using "tertiary" in the rewrite.

Resolution

Warning!!

The following statement is only a resolution to a Standard Improvement Request (SIR) and is NOT part of the current DMIS standard, nor is it guaranteed to become part of the next revision of the DMIS standard even if voted and accepted by the DMIS National Standards Committee. This resolution is tentative because it may not be incorporated into the next version of the standard, it could be changed prior to the next release, or it could be changed as the result of the "public review and comment" period required for the next version of the standard. If you choose to use this tentative resolution, you do so at your own risk since at this time it is not part of the DMIS standard.

Resolved per 1/99 DNSC Meeting Kansas City,MO.

Resolved by resolution to SIR 98-64.
