Standards Committees
DMIS
National Standards Committee
CAM-I's first
standard was initiated by the CAM-I Quality Assurance Program
which conceived and developed DMIS, the Dimensional Measuring
Interface Standard. DMIS is a standard for the bi-directional
communication of inspection data between computer systems and
inspection equipment. The latest version of the standard is DMIS
Version 4.0 which was approved by ANSI on April 17, 2001. (Its
official designation is ANSI/CAM-I 104.0-2001, Part 1).. DMIS
4.0 has also been submitted to the appropriate ISO standards committee,
which has initiated the international standards process. DMIS
has literally created a new industry, and new "DMIS products"
and implementations frequently appear on the market.
The DMIS National
Standards Committee (DNSC) is responsible for the maintenance
and support of the DMIS standard. It is through the dedicated
and committed efforts of the DNSC that continued development and
enhancements are made to the standard. The DNSC is a volunteer
group of industry professionals whose companies contribute their
time and expertise to support the standard. It is also the DNSC
that produces and delivers each new version of the DMIS standard.
DMIS
DMIS Part 2 Subcommittee
DMIS Part 2
is the emerging object-oriented standard for communications between
advanced inspection equipment and metrology software tools. Sponsored
by CAM-I and supported by industry leaders, DMIS Part 2 builds upon the
widely accepted DMIS standard, providing a framework for extending
the capabilities of inspection equipment and for integrating it
within the factory. This emerging standard brings true plug-and-play
capabilities to CMMs and other inspection devices - including
vision and laser systems - to enable inspection users to realize
a greater return on investment for current and future inspection
equipment. Implementing the entire DMIS 3.0+ standard, DMIS Part 2 adds
plug-and-play support, networking capabilities, and factory integration,
then packages them in a powerful object-oriented standard interface,
and delivers a dynamic integrating platform that will enable manufacturers to cut costs and achieve their
ever increasing quality requirements through inspection technology.

Standard Operator
Interface Committee
The CAM-I
Standard Operator Interface (SOI) for Coordinate Measuring Machines
(CMMs) is also an American National Standard. It was also developed
by the Quality Assurance Program, and its purpose is to allow
a skilled operator to activate any vendor's CMM and to initiate
and carry out a part inspection using a previously developed inspection
program. The idea is to allow operators to run inspection part
programs on any CMM, just as a licensed driver can drive any standard
make of automobile.
The DMIS National
Standards Committee is also responsible for the maintenance and
support of the SOI Standard.
